West Side Story Essay -- essays research papers
West Side Story Day 4: 2-page essay à à à à à The West Side Story portrays the lives of two different gangs living in America, as well as their beliefs and examples of living a good life. The expectations of what people consider the good life to be may vary on a personââ¬â¢s morals and their dreams of what life is truly about. In this movie, whether or not these characters were good people, lived a good life, or lived in a good society is a very controversial topic. à à à à à The characters of the West Side Story were not good people. The two gangs focused their lives on fighting with each other rather than attempting to get along and accept the differences between them. The gangs did not have any hopes or aspirations for their futures and cared about nothing more than being in a gang. Each gang made one mistake after another and never learned from any of them nor did they try to. Doc, an old and wise man, informed the boys with his knowledge and tried to open the eyes of both gangs to the hatred that engulfed them. Everything Doc had to say went through one ear and out the other, because the boys refused to see past their differences. The Jets, one of the gangs, accept what society believes of them and never make any effort to erase their bad history. They listen to what others tell them, agreeing to the excuses for their bad behavior. This is just one example of how the boys do not attempt to make a better life for themselves, or try t...

Promote person centred approaches Essay
Person centred values must influence all aspects of health and social care. The individual is at the centre of the care and are involved in every aspect of it. This ensures that their support, activities, care plans and support plans are tailored to the individual and meet their needs in a way that is appropriate to them. There are person-centred values which must be used to underpin the above. These are respect, partnership, individuality, rights, choice, privacy, independence and dignity. In following the values, people are then empowered to live their lives and achieve their potential. A care plan details a persons needs and wishes, what is being done to meet them and who is involved in doing so. If a care plan is person-centred it reflects their individuality and will contain their own views and wishes, inform you about what they think is important and how they feel about their circumstances and tell; you how they want to live their life. By knowing this, it means you can support them to live how they want and achieve their dreams, recognising their choices and ideas. Read more: Define person centred values essay There are factors which influence the capacity of an individual to give consent. Having the capacity means having the physical or mental ability to do something, and consent means having the ability to give informed permission for something to happen. It also implies the individual understands what their decision means. The ability to give consent comes from being able to understand complex and abstract ideas or concepts without the need for evidence. You have to be able to weigh up the pros and cons and make a decision. Therefore you need to be able to understand the risks and benefits of a situation, be able to freely express your thoughts, ask questions and have the time to process the situation. Personal values and beliefs, the level of education and a personââ¬â¢s communication skills impact on their ability to make a decision. As does, having their thoughts and opiuons respected, treated with dignity and knowing theywont be judged for the decisions they do make. If consent can not be readily established you need to adapt your approach toà the individual. For example if a person needs time to process information and go over it time and time again, then you do that till they are ready. Some people are unable to consent due to their learning disability or medical condition. In this case, the individual will have a representative will act in their best interests. Any decisions already given consent too would be found in their care plan. Family members are a great point of contact. Active participation is about working in a way which respects the individualââ¬â¢s right to participate in life as independently as possible. They are seen as active participant or partner. To apply active participation to an individuals needs you would make sure you are aware of their likes, dislikes, wishes and also their abilities. You would then use this knowledge to come up with a plan that best suits the individual. This ensures a happy outcome for everyone. It is person-centred and put the individual in control and living an independent life where possible. Sometimes an individual needs support to challenge or question a decision about them which is made by others. You can do this by supporting the individual to decide what they want to do and how they will do it, ensuring they understand the decision that has been made and help them think through why they want to challenge the decision. You can identify who else you might be able to get involved to help out and consider if an advocate would be necessary. Arranging a meeting to address their concerns can also be done. Identity, self-image and self-esteem are all linked. Self-image is all about how we see ourselves, and our opinions of our won worth. Self-esteem is all about being confident in who we are and out sense of value. Identity is knowing who you are, what makes you unique, your personality and characteristics. If you donââ¬â¢t know who you are as an individual then you are more likely to struggle with a low sense of value which creates a negative self-image and low self-esteem. This can manifest in individuals behaviour, ability to make simple decisions, express themselves and make choices. Wellbeing is a feeling that you are feeling well and doing well. There areà many factors that influence this. The practical aspects of life factors are income, employment, quality of living environment, physical and mental health and access to services and amenities. There are also factors in relation to personal and social relationships which are support networks, loving and intimate relationships and relationships with the wider community. Values and attitudes also contribute to wellbeing. These are an individualââ¬â¢s sense of purpose and value, their hopes, dreams and fears, their satisfaction with life, what they think and feel about themselves and any moral or spiritual codes of behaviour. How people are treated by society and their life experiences play a part in how they see themselves and therefore affect their sense of wellbeing. Risk taking and risk assessments relate to rights and responsibilities. The exercise of individual rights goes side by side with the individual taking responsibility for the outcomes of their decision. Therefore, you need to be sure that the individuals have the capacity to make an informed decision and fully understand any potential consequences. Risk assessments need to be regularly reviewed as peoples needs and abilities change, especially if their health deteriorates as they may be expected to do more than they can manage. Also, if an activity was agreed to develop skills and confidence, by not reviewing the risk assessment, your are undermining everything they have achieved and they wonââ¬â¢t be able to continue to progress.

Police Brutality A Nation Of Free And The Home Of The Brave
America, once considered the land of the free and the home of the brave, is a nation cloaked in fear of those they pay to protect and serve. Police militarization in a post-9/11 era has led to constant tales of abuse of authority by police departments nationwide. The issue is threefold. First, police brutality is growing as a national problem. The people charged with making the streets safer for ordinary citizens are becoming the enemy of the people, the villains, who consider themselves judge, jury, and executioner. Secondly, even the smallest police departments are armed with military grade weaponry. And, thirdly, police regularly violate the civil and human rights of citizens, even committing criminal offenses against them. It is noâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦M-16 s and Mine Resistant Ambush Protection vehicles (MRAPs) raise very serious questions, as this equipment is created for use in a war-zone. The magnitude of these weapons can change the mentality of the police, brut ality has been present through our society before this equipment was ever acquired. What is this equipment believed to change? The pubic is in greater fear of the police seeing them resemble military personnel. The police were created to protect and serve the people of our nation and now as they are purchasing military assault weapons it brings into question the objective of the enforcements. Police abuse surfaces as one of the most profound human rights violations possible in the United States. Unwarranted shootings, fatal choking, severe beatings, and rough treatment have all exacerbated the problem of police brutality within America. In the New York Times report Eric Garner, a black, adult male, broke up a street fight. Instead of commending him, the police questioned him and accused him of selling untaxed cigarettes. When Mr. Garner denied any wrongdoing the police used physical force against Mr. Garner. The physical altercation ended with Eric Garner asphyxiated due to the choke hold (Goldstein, Schweber, 1). The officer clearly violated Eric Garner s rights by this obsessive use of force. Everyone has the right to fair and equal treatment. As citizens of the United States we are innocent until

The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain - 1549 Words
The idea of freedom, in Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, is displayed as an issue that Huck and Jim must overcome to achieve a greater life. Or so they both think. As the story progresses however, it isn t as easy as they first planned. They leave to gain their freedom, but as they go on their journey, they begin to realize that it isn t as easy as they had originally thought. Through the progression that both Jim and Huck have, it becomes apparent that although their original goal was to gain freedom, the true achievement of equality is still to come. An idea that appears early on within the story is the idea that Huck and Jim are searching for their freedom together. Huck and Jim first find themselves stranded together on Jacksonââ¬â¢sâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Or so Mark Twain made it seem. We see Huckââ¬â¢s belief of this begin to dwindle as he tries to take advantage of Jim on various occasions. However there is a section where the reader can see that although Jim knows he is a slave, he still sees himself as equal to whites as they both argue on why people speak different languages. Well, it s a blame ridicklous way, en I doan want to hear no mo bout it. Dey ain no sense in it. Looky here, Jim; does a cat talk like we do? (82) It becomes apparent here that Jim doesnââ¬â¢t see the reason why some people donââ¬â¢t speak like others if they are all men. This is Mark Twainââ¬â¢s way of showing how Jim doesnââ¬â¢t see why if all men are the same, why are some enslaved and some arenââ¬â¢t. Perhaps an ev en bigger point is seen the very next page where it becomes apparent to Huck that Jim is making good points as to why Frenchmen shouldnââ¬â¢t speak a different language than the rest of them. Huck without having a logical reason why this would be the case gets frustrated and does something that the reader has never seen him do before, call Jim a nigger. ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t learn a nigger to argue so I quitâ⬠(83) This shows how although both Huck and Jim are striving for the similar goal of freedom, Huckââ¬â¢s (the symbol of the white man) will not allow Jim, or african americans, to be equal which is really what they are fighting for. As the story begins to progress, Huck and Jim find that much like the abolition of slavery,

The Importance of Bank Lending Essay Example
Essays on The Importance of Bank Lending Essay The paper "The Importance of Bank Lending" is an outstanding example of an essay on finance and accounting. The importance of bank lending can never be overstated. Bank loans are essential to the economic growth of any country around the world. As bank loan provides the capital for various businesses to expand or those that never existed to start. It also meets the payrolls that keep many nations around the world working.Ã Then what is a bank loan?In finance, a bank loan usually is a fixed term with given regular fixed repayment.Ã A bank loan is typically extended for a fixed term with a pre-agreed schedule of interest and capital repayments. Interest is normally payable on the initial sum borrowed, irrespective of the falling balance as repayments are performed. Compared to other borrowings from the bank such as bank overdraft, bank loan has a relatively lower rate of interest. Through loans likewise, a large sum of money can be borrowed as long as there is a pre-agreed schedu le of interest and capital repayments.Ã A bank loan is supposed to be paid at the stated time, or the borrower of the loan faces risks.A bank loan can also be defined as a sum of money borrowed by a business or customer from a bank, often particular purpose must be stated to be provided with the loan, such as an individual or a business may state that they need a loan to purchase a vehicle then using such basis the individual is provided with the loan after an agreed interest on the sum taken. The role of a bank loan is to offer the bank customer with the required funds to achieve the purpose of the loan and to give the bank interest income. Most bank lending is accepted on collateral in one way or another and hence protects the bank from risk in the case of loan default by the customer. It is also important to note that the interest to be charged on the loan is determined depending on the two things. One, the bank loan interest depends on the rate of interest the bank offers as dictated by the Federal Bank. Secondly, the determination of the amount of interest rate to a bank loan is on the amount borrowed and the payment period. There are several kinds of bank lending available to customers. The most common types are home loans given on both fixed and adjustable-rate, car loans on both new and used vehicles, credit cards, student loans, personal loans and business bank loans in several different forms. The initial step in attaining a bank loan is by the customer of the bank accepting the terms that will be set on the loan then filling the loan application form. The application of the bank loan will include financial information, personal information, and questions about the purpose of the loan. After customer's, the application will go into underwriting, here the bank will decide on whether or not to loan the client and at what rate of interest given the period applied for. Many banks will analyze the customer's credit rating and offer a bank loan.

Richard III and Adolf Hitler Richard II Richard II Essay Example For Students
Richard III and Adolf Hitler Richard II Richard II Essay I EssaysRichard III and Adolf Hitler In William Shakespeares Richard III, we see Shakespeares interpretation of despot rule and the parallels that stem from this interpretation. The character type of Richard has been examined and marveled for thousands of years. From Platos examination of despot rule in the Republic, we see the motives of what drives despot rulers. A look at the background of Richard and how his upbringing and personal life contributed to his insecurities will help to understand why someone may become a despot. The comparison of Adolf Hitler to that of Richard, shown by the modern motion picture Richard III, will show the rapid rise and fall of the despot and the reality of totalitarian rule. Platos Republic, a fascinating look at the comparison of the just soul and the unjust soul, allows one to see the philosophical motives behind despot rule. Despot rulers are simply driven by fear. Their anxieties and insecurities lead to a hatred that has a desire to destroy, deep-rooted in violence. Despot rulers are also never satisfied with the power they have at any given time, thus exposing their constant fear of retaliation from their subjects. This examination of the despot ruler by Plato clearly shows the motives by which despot rulers rule, but it fails to explain why and how these motives originate in the human mind. In order to comprehend why such a high level of fear and insecurity can be brought about, a look at the upbringing and personal life of Richard should be brought into discussion. One of three brothers, Richard was in constant competition of who would succeed in gaining the throne of England. Richard, like his other brothers, wanted the title of king quite badly, but as time pressed on it seemed less likely that Richard would succeed in gaining the throne. His shrewd attitude and a physical deformity, that left him nearly paralyzed, were two of the many reasons why Richard would be kept of the throne. Richard quickly became aware of this and he therefore began his rampage to insure himself the throne. After killing off his brothers and many others, who were eligible to succeed, Richard finally became King of England. This title did not bring comfort, and Richard continued to kill anybody who posed a threat in keeping him from remaining king. Richards reign as king lasted only two years, and during this two year period Richard was never once happy, thus showing how the unjust soul will never be happy. His insecurities and fears worsened as he gained more and more power. This proves Platos examination of the unjust soul or the despot ruler. To understand why he became this way, one must look at how his competitive nature was hindered by his deformities and how he could not come to understand his disposition. It is clear that the motion picture Richard III aims to exhibit a parallel between the lives of Richard and Adolf Hitler, but why? The film aims to show a universal theme: the reality of the despot ruler. Richard ruled over England during the sixteenth century, a time when totalitarian rule was quite prevalent. Hitlers rule however, took place in the twentieth century, which seems quite amazing seeing how the ideas of liberty and justice had been accepted by most western countries. What is more amazing is that Hitler was able to gain so much power without military intervention by other countries. By the time the allies decided to take a stand, Hitlers empire had conquered many eastern European lands, and had occupation over France. Therefore, rule by a despot is something we must always be aware of. .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc , .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc .postImageUrl , .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc , .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc:hover , .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc:visited , .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc:active { border:0!important; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc:active , .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u537d64d5340cfde70a15e3f8671e6bfc:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: So Bored I Could Scream!
